Out of collaboration from Cartier and Nowness, we were in charge of creating a short, stylish semi-fictionalization of Madame Wellington Koo’s life and influence on Cartier, brought into a contemporary framing through carefully researched scripting and art direction.
Working with the internationally renowned actress Li Meng ( A touch of Sin, Dead Pigs, ...) helped us bring to life the perfect vision of how Madame Wellington Koo would be today. Due to geographic differences, we had to manage two different shoots in Shanghai, where the actress located and London
Madame Wellington Koo/ Huang Hui-lan was an influential Chinese/Indonesian Socialite who became a muse for Cartier in the ’20s, and through their relationship, she introduced him to various Chinese artisanal and aesthetic influences that informed his work. Our film takes moments from her life and imbues them into a scripted short ‘fashion’ style film that celebrates the woman herself and Chinese aesthetics and craftsmanship. It is a celebration of the diverse vision of Cartier and the wonder of its influence on cross-cultural collaboration.
